Mission Trip - Day 2

This morning my group was scheduled to go to LA Mission where we would interact with men and women in a recovery program. I was excited and looking forward to this because one of the things they do in the program is memorize scripture every day. Since I am memorizing I thought it would be fun to see what scripture someone in recovery was memorizing. But when we got there we leaned there had been a scheduling error and they didn't need us. So we had to go to Plan B. My group was then split up into 2 groups (Susan took half and I took half) and we were sent o a "scavenger hunt" in downtown -- between the jewelry district and the toy district. We're on a short break right now before going to our next assignment.
We saw a lot this morning -- were stretched a little. We found a homeless person and invited him to lunch with us. We talked to a business person, a policeman, and our homeless friend. All were very willing to talk but were not willing to let us pray with them. For me, the thing I've really felt so far is that we have all this in Bakersfield. Maybe we need to start focusing on missions at home. Are we as willing to serve when it doesn't include a "fun" trip out of town? Would we be as willing to set aside time to serve right in our own home town? Last night on the prayer tour I just kept thinking "we have this at home, too."

Yes, I agree that we have this at home, too. But I think that for the High School age...getting away from home and depending on one another in a "foreign" place is a bonding experience that probably wouldn't happen in more familiar surroundings. And their comfort zone is challenged when they don't know the neighborhood! So, maybe the solution is to take what they're learning and have another experience here...using the things they learned there. It can be a springboard to more ministry close to home. Praying for you all!
